Crawfordsville boys’ basketball quickly watched a 26-19 halftime lead come and go in a 63-50 loss to Northview on Saturday night.
The Knights (12-5) outscored the Athenians (9-7) 25-10 in the final quarter, including an 18-0 run to start the period.
“They went inside and we didn’t really have an answer for it,” Crawfordsville coach David Pierce said. “Our 1 on 1 defense wasn’t great. So when they get by they were able to kick to an open guy.”
Northview knocked down 18-of-26 shots in the second half, including 10-of-12 in the fourth quarter. They 8-of-16 from behind the arc for the game.
Cade Bryan led the Knights with 20 points, while Carson Gettle (13 total points) and Caleb Swearingen each scored 11 second half points.
Trailing 36-32, Northview went on a 6-0 run to take its first lead since late in the first quarter at 38-36 with 1:39 left in the third quarter, and took the lead for good on Bryan’s second straight basket to start the fourth quarter at 42-40.
The Athenians failed to hit a field goal in the fourth quarter until the 2:15 mark, when it was already a 19-point lead for the Knights.
Crawfordsville’s seventh loss meant another cold shooting night for the Athenians. After 10-of-23 (43%) effort in the first half, Crawfordsville hit just 9-of-28 (32%) in the second half. They were 4-of-22 from deep.
“We were 0-of-13 (from 3) between six guys,” Pierce said. “And that can’t happen in varsity basketball in the state of Indiana. If you’re going to take those shots, you’ve got to be able to hit them.”
Jesse Hall led the Athenians with 12 points, while Ian Hensley and Ty Lynas added nine apiece.
Inconsistency on the offensive end continues to get in the Athenians way, as they have failed to win multiple games in a row since early January.
“I was looking at their (Northview) stats and they play seven (guys),” Pierce said. “I looked at our stats and we play 10 (guys). And the reason we play 10 is because there’s such inconsistency, and we are constantly searching for someone to step up. We need consistent play out of our players. That comes with being young, and hopefully it will iron out itself. We are proud of our guys. Kids are playing hard and keeping a good attitudes, we’ve just got to find ways to hit shots. That’s a mental toughness and mental maturity they’ve got to get to.”
Northview has won three-straight and travels to Terre Haute South on Thursday. Crawfordsville hosts Western Boone.
