LINDEN — North Montgomery’s baseball team remained undefeated on the young season with an 11-4 win over Sagamore Conference rival Western Boone. The Chargers’ offense pounded out 10 hits giving three freshmen pitchers all the support they needed.
Freshman Jarrod Kirsch picked up his second win of the season by throwing four strong innings. The lefty gave up one earned run and surrended two hits while striking out eight of the 16 batters he faced.
North Montgomery scored runs in all of the first three innings including eight tallies in a big third inning to stretch the lead to 11-0.
Charger Coach Ryan Nuppnau credited his team’s strong start to good execution.
“We got off to a good start and Jarrod came out strong and pitched well right off the bat. He kept their hitters off balance,” Nuppnau said. “We have been working on situational stuff with our hitting. We did a good job putting the ball in play and putting the ball where we needed to.”
Freshman pitcher Quintin Glassing relieved Kirsch in the top of the fifth inning giving up two runs in two and two-thirds of an inning. The newbie allowed a run in the fith and seventh innings before giving way to fresman leftie Ross Dyson for the last out of the game after Western Boone had loaded the bases. Dyson finished the game by striking out the only batter he faced.
The Charger batters recorded a hit in five of their six innings at bat. In the big third inning North Montgomery had five hits when they sent 10 batters to the plate.
Star hurler Elliott Young went the distance on the mound to take the loss.
The teams will meet again at 5 p.m. tonight at Western Boone. Nuppnau said he believed his team let up in the final three innings when Western Boone seemed to gain a little momentum.
“Western Boone got a little momentum in the end when they started hitting the ball,” Nuppnau said. “We just need to go over there and play. We will come in with respect for (Western Boone) tomorrow and just play one pitch and one batter at a time.”
