BOYS SOCCER: Mounties shutout Chargers

Posted

NEW MARKET — After dropping last years’ game 5-0 to the Chargers, the Southmont boys soccer team wanted to avenge that shutout against North Montgomery on Tuesday night and they were able to do so in dominating fashion as they defeated the Chargers (0-6, 0-3 SAC) 6-0 on the same night that they honored their three seniors.

One of those seniors, Beckett Jett recorded at hat trick in the Mounties shutout win. Skyler Wood, Ryan Reimondo, and Beck McIntyre each scored a goal each for the Mounties in the win.

“We were kind of down after the Crawfordsville game (lost 9-1),” Jett said. “It was really special to come out and get this win on senior night. This can really be a confidence booster for us going forward.”

Both teams for the first 30 minutes of the game couldn’t crack the scoreboard, however McIntyre got the Mounties (2-1, 1-1 SAC) on the board with 10 minutes left in the half, and in the final seconds of the half Jett made the score 2-0 with his first of his three goals on the night.

First-year coach Stephanie Kennedy credits her teams ability to make the game a lot more simpler.

“We were making a lot more short passes tonight,” Kennedy said. “This win will be great for the guy’s mental side if things. We can use this going forward and push on for the rest of the season.”

Even though it was a shutout loss, coach Tristian Hall took positives away from the way his team played.

“We had a few times where we just shot ourselves in the foot tonight,” he said. “The guys feel good about tonight and they owned up to the mistakes they made. With an inexperienced team like we have, that’s a great thing to see as a coach.”

The Mounties return to action on Thursday as they travel to North Putnam, while the Chargers will host Bethesda also on Thursday.
