BOYS SOCCER PREVIEW: Athenians ready to compete for county, conference, sectional

Posted

Only Tri-West stood in the way of Crawfordsville winning the Sagamore Conference title in boys’ soccer in 2020.

And with two key scorers returning and a plethora of defenders, the Athenians are ready to compete for championships this fall.

Crawfordsville graduated Kevin Barrera, who scored 13 goals and added 15 assists, but return Emmett Bowman’s 16 goals amd Patrick Corado’s 11.

“Replacing a great player like Kevin is never easy, but we want to play a team game,” Crawfordsville coach Marcus Hale said. “Last year, we had 15 different goal scorers who were provided assists from 16 different players. It was exciting to watch them play.

“The team chemistry and playing for each other will allow us to get the most out of the upcoming season.”

The Athenians also return goalkeeper and now senior Landon Timmons, who joins fellow seniors Landon Hurt and Edwin Gill as captains.

Timmons had 126 saves as a junior last season and averaged just 1.7 goals against per game from the net.

Crawfordsville also returns Andrew Jones, Joseph Sanchez, Marshall Horton, Alex Caballero, Dirk Oshel, Yeison Cifuentes, and Shota Koyanagi and welcomes newcomers Max Brumett, Thristan Callejas, Sergio Hernandez, Whitman Horton, Cooper Murray, Ryotaro Nishina, and Alex Saidian.
