NEW MARKET — Monon Athletic Conference leader Cascade defeated home-standing Southmont 49-7 on Friday. The Cadets stopped the Mountie running game to gain the victory.

Cascade held the Mounties to just a net of five yards on the ground and 43 yards passing for a total of 48 yards. Southmont just recorded five first downs the entire evening.

Meanwhile, the Cadets had 369 yards rushing and 77 passing yards for a total of 446 yards.

The game started out with the Mounties getting two Cadet turnovers via a fumble recovery and an interception. The first quarter ended with Cascade up 7-0 despite turning the ball over twice in the first period.

The Mounties best chance to score in the first quarter. An Eli Hannum 6-yard pass to Caden Miller set the ball inside the Cascade 20-yard line. However, the Cadets blocked a 24-yard field goal attempt to keep the score tied at 0-0.

The Cadets recovered the blocked kick on the 9-yard line and ended up scoring on a Lucas Farmer 79-yard touchdown run.

Unfortunately for the Mounties, the Cadets scored the next 28 points making the score 35-0 at halftime. The point difference meant the second half would be played with a running clock.

Cadet Timothy Turner scored on touchdown runs of 8-yards and 2-yards to put Cascade up 21-0. Cadet Luke Austin also scored from two yards out. Turner scored his third touchdown of the quarter from the 1-yard line to put Cascade up 35-0 at halftime.

Farmer scored early in the third quarter on a 35-yard run to make the score 42-0.

Southmont scored on the ensuing kickoff when Nehemiah Holmes scored on an 81-yard kickoff return.

Cascade reserve running back Charlie Hutchison hit paydirt from the 13-yard line to complete the scoring.

“Cascade is good and they really came at us in the second quarter, which is what they are capable of,” Southmont Coach Desson Hannum said. “They run their quick offense very efficiently. Their defense also played well and took our running game away.”

The Mounties (4-4, 3-3 MAC) have now lost three games in a row and look forward to getting back on track Friday at MAC foe Greencastle (3-5, 3-3 MAC).
