The Crawfordsville Fire Department recently awarded Sen. Karen Tallian (D-Ogden Dunes) the Academy of International Mobile Healthcare Integration Excellence in EMS Advocacy Award for authoring and advocating for Senate Enrolled Act (SEA) 498. SEA 498 gives communities the ability to create a mobile integrated healthcare program.

The law, which was passed in 2019, allowed the City of Crawfordsville to establish the MIH paramedicine program, and gives low-income individuals in communities access to a variety of important out-of-hospital services.

“Sen. Tallian was a huge asset to the conception of the community paramedicine program at the state level,” said Crawfordsville Fire Chief Scott Busenbark. “She demonstrated leadership and dedication to Hoosiers through her understanding for the need of programs like this one, and making sure everyone has the resources to receive quality healthcare in their community.”

The Excellence in EMS Advocacy Award is presented by AIMHI, which represents high performance emergency medical and mobile healthcare providers in the U.S. and abroad. AIMHI leads the transformation of EMS to mobile integrated healthcare through the development of high-performance systems, and sets the standard for clinical excellence, accountability, public education, research and economic efficiency.

The award is presented to a legislator or regulator who has made a significant impact on the integration of EMS, or the advancement of the integration of EMS into the healthcare system.
