A Crawfordsville Fire Department vehicle was involved in a crash with a pedestrian near downtown on Monday, authorities said.

The crash was reported at 4:21 p.m. at West Market and South Walnut streets, according to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.

A CFD battalion unit driven by Deputy Fire Chief Jim Fulwider was headed eastbound on Market Street approaching officers directing traffic at the intersection due to a malfunctioned traffic light, said MCSO Chief Deputy Major Matt McCarty. Fulwider was not on an emergency run at the time.

Fulwider was preparing to stop and assist the officers when his vehicle struck 65-year-old Raymond Randolph of Crawfordsville, McCarty said.

Witnesses saw Randolph crossing the road outside of the crosswalk and heading north, McCarty said. Investigators say Fulwider told them he couldn’t stop in time to avoid striking him.

Randolph complained of leg pain and was taken by ambulance to Franciscan Health Crawfordsville, McCarty said.

Fulwider cleared a routine alcohol test at the scene and the investigation is complete, McCarty said.
