Charger tennis makes it back to back wins

GREENCASTLE – Having split its first two matches during a three-match in three-day stretch, North Montgomery had a chance to make it a winning week of boys’ tennis play with a trip to Greencastle Thursday.

The two squads split the No. 1 and 2 positions in singles and doubles play but the Chargers were able to pick up the swing bout at No. 3 singles to end the week with a 3-2 win over the Tiger Cubs.

“The guys have been taking practices a lot more seriously,” North Montgomery head coach Dane Baldwin said about the win being the third in four matches for the team. “We’ve been trying to get on the grind and the work is starting to show off. “We’re just going to keep getting better.”

On one set of courts, the Charger doubles teams were able to lock in identical winning scores.

Beckett Martin and Brookes Walters defeated Dorian Dowd and Justin Evans at No. 1 doubles while Haze Kashon and Nate McCoy defeated Joel Hammond and Paul Lewis at No. 2 doubles, both matches ending with 6-3, 6-1 score lines.

On the other set of course, Owen Utterback was defeated at No. 1 singles by Eli Callahan 6-1, 6-2 while Hayden Turner had a close first set with Jay Glotzbach but fell at No. 2 singles 6-4, 6-1.

Fortunately, Alex Chapman found the winning point at No. 3 singles, defeating Andrew Adams 6-0, 6-2 to lock in the win not only for the night but for the week.

“We’ve had some tough losses but as the season is going on we’re getting better,” Baldwin said about being able to close out the match.

North Montgomery returns to action Monday with a county clash at Crawfordsville on tap, followed by another Sagamore Conference match at home with Frankfort Tuesday.

“Crawfordsville’s tough,” Baldwin said. “We’re going to have to bring our A-game but last year, we stuck with them and we’re right there with them again.

“We almost beat Southmont in two or three positions at sectional last year, so everyone is right there. You just have to show up on the day.”
