Charger wrestling looking for improvement under Kyle

North Montgomery wrestling coach Lincoln Kyle is realistic where the Charger program is at the beginning of the season. After several years of success, North Montgomery has been low on athletes. But, Kyle is optimistic with his present crop of grapplers.

One reason for the excitement is the fact the Chargers will be able to enter an individual in each weight class. That was not the case last season. Kyle said his squad has worked hard so they can be better this campaign.

“We have lots of athletes that made it to the regional tournament last year and are looking to make it even further this year”. Kyle said. “A lot of guys and girls have been working really hard in the wrestling room and put a lot of time in the weight room this summer and fall.”

The coach has quickly found out that senior wrestlers like Gage Galloway, Todd Laffoon and Dylan Braun, who were all-conference football players, are helping younger wrestlers.

“The senior class has really emerged as leaders this year,” Kyle said. “I can’t say enough good things about them. All of them work hard every single day in the wrestling room and do a great job of leading by example. They are setting a great foundation for this year and for future teams.”

Kyle said the goals for the team are the same as every year. They want to get back to the top of the county, Sagamore Conference and advance several wrestlers in the state tournament. The coach has told his team what it will take to reach the goals.

“As far as expectations go, I just expect our athletes to go out and give full effort and fight in every single match,” Kyle said.  “I firmly believe that if my wrestlers go out, wrestle hard, and focus on scoring the next point, winning will take care of itself.”

The Chargers opened up their 2022-23 season at the Parke Heritage Invite this past Saturday going 3-1.

“We will definitely be ready for our first competition, the Charger coach said. “There is always more that we need to go over, but it is a long season. With the competition that we will face at Park Heritage, I believe our guys are more than ready to compete.”
