Chargers fall to Knights on senior night

Posted

North Montgomery has gone into a funk on the baseball diamond.  Losers of five of six  games, it was the Lafayette Central Catholic Knights that defeated the Chargers 10-5 Thursday on their Senior Night.

Central Catholic came out strong by scoring eight runs in the first two innings against North starter Austin Sulc. The Knights collected seven hits in the first two innings to take the 8-0 lead.

“I thought Austin was pounding the zone which is what we wanted him to do,” Charger coach Matt Voorhees said. “Central Catholic did a good job and even when Austin got two strikes they got those little flares to the outfield. I wasn’t upset with Austin’s pitching.”

Charger lefty Corbin Meadows entered the game in the top of the third frame and held the Knights to two runs, which only one run was earned, in three innings.

With Meadows keeping Central Catholic at bay, the Charger bats starting coming alive. North Montgomery (14-12) was able to score three runs. With one out, Gage Galloway doubled to deep right center field and scored when Jarrod Kirsch hit one off the centerfield fence. After Roman Utterback singled, which advanced Galloway to third, Ross Dyson hit a sacrifice groundout scoring Galloway. Dylan Braun then singled bring home Utterback and cutting the Knight lead to 8-3.

Central Catholic (16-9) was able to scratch a run against Meadows in the fourth inning on three consecutive singles.

The Chargers kept battling and were able to score three more runs in the game, but could not overcome the Knights fast start.

North added two runs in their last at-bat to make the final score 10-5.

Galloway, Utterback, Kirsch and Dylan Braun all hit doubles in the game. North finished with 10 hits.

Braun went 3-for-3 at the plate while Kirsch and Utterback each totaled two hits. Cade Cole added the other Charger hit.

Charger seniors honored were Mailey Gaskin, Galloway, Braun, Thomas Laffoon, Brooks Walters and Brecken Hardy.

“We have some more baseball to play, but we are going to miss the seniors when it is over,” Voorhees said. “They have given a lot to our program and are a great people,”

The Chargers play at Southmont today to complete their Sagamore Conference part of the schedule.

“We know South’s record but we know they are not a bad team,” Voorhees said. “They beat us last year and we have guys that remember that game. I think we will be ready to play.”
