Chargers lose big to North Putnam

Posted

ROACHDALE — North Montgomery hoped to use the momentum of winning two straight games in their Monon Athletic Conference showdown at North Putnam on Friday. The Cougars had other ideas and defeated the Chargers 49-6.

The Chargers scored their only touchdown at the end of the first quarter when newly converted fullback Braylon Denham scored from the one-yard line.

Denham, who is 6 foot and 225 pounds, traded his #66 defensive tackle jersey for #35 for the game.

North Putnam started taking control of the game midway of the second quarter and eventually scored 49 straight points. The game entered running clock play with three minutes remaining in the third quarter.

North Montgomery Coach Josh Thompson was happy with his team’s start, but disappointed with the rest of the game.

“We started the game like we wanted and we played really well,” Thompson said. “Then we started making a lot of mistakes and reverted back to some of our old ways. We have to correct things this week with the sectional beginning Friday.”

The Charger defense surrendered 206 yards on the ground to North Putnam. Cougar quarterback Owen Thurman rushed for 121 yards on 16 carries and connected on 7-of-8 passes for129 yards to dismantle North Montgomery’s defense.

The Charger offense was shut down. North gained just 57 yards rushing and 32 yards passing for a total of 89 yards in the game.

North Montgomery senior running back Dakota Glasson was held to 21 yards on 13 carries.

The Chargers (3-6) will play Indianapolis Washington (3-6) at 7 p.m. Friday at Charger Field in 3A Sectional No. 29.
