Chargers overcome slow start, down Eagles 57-49

LINDEN — North Montgomery used an 18-point third quarter to race past Faith Christian 57-49 Tuesday night in girls’ basketball.

Trailing 26-25 at the half, the Chargers started the third quarter on a 11-2 run, and never looked back.

Maddie Moseley propelled the Chargers with a layup and a 3-pointer, while Katie Rice scored eight of her game-high 17 points in the third period to give the Chargers (6-3) a 43-36 lead over the Eagles (1-8) after 24 minutes of play.

“We just had to wake up,” North Montgomery coach Ryan Nuppnau said. “We got off to a slow start. You have to give credit to Faith Christian, they came out and played hard and wanted it bad. It was good to see the girls rebound and respond after the halftime speech.”

The two teams went back and forth in the first half, but Faith Christian controlled the tempo with 14 offensive rebounds, while forcing North Montgomery into 13 first half turnovers.

The Eagles knocked down a trio of first half 3-pointers, and led by as many as five, including a 17-12 advantage after a quarter. Lily Martin scored seven of her team-high 15 points in the first half to lead the Eagles.

Luckily, for the Chargers, they had one of their best shooting nights of the season, connecting on 23-of-55 shots.
Maddie Moseley added 12 for the Chargers, while Madi Welch chipped in 11, and Emily Sennett eight.

Nuppnau praised a pair of bench players after Moseley, and Grace McClaskey set with foul trouble in the second half.

“We had a big pickup from Sidney Zachary and Hadley Broadwater there in the third quarter into fourth quarter,” he said. “They were huge for us coming off the bench. They were a big factor in us building the lead.”
