RUSSIAVILLE — North Montgomery used a 24-point second quarter to win 38-21 at Western on Friday. The Chargers evened their record to 1-1.
Western led 7-0 after one quarter but early in the second quarter North quarterback Lincoln Heide connected with Hunter Haworth for a 42-yard touchdown pass. A successful two-point conversion gave the Chargers an 8-7 lead.
Five minutes later Western regained the lead to go up 14-8.
After a Western punt placed the ball on the Charger 15-yard line, Heide hit speedster Clayton Brown for another touchdown that covered 85 yards. After another successful two-point conversion North was up 16-14.
The Chargers next executed an onside kickoff leading to Hayworth’s second touchdown from Heide which covered 28 yards.
The Charger defense got their first score of the season with four seconds on the first-half clock when they got a safety making the score 24-14 at the break.
The second half started poorly for the Chargers when they fumbled the ball on their first play of the second half. Western took advantage of the turnover and scored to make the score 24-21.
North responded with Heide’s third scoring strike of the game when he hit Clayton Brown for a 10-yard pass.
Heide later scored a 2-yard rushing touchdown to complete the scoring.
North Montgomery coach Josh Thompson said he felt his team played better and was pleased when the game got close, his team responded.
“I am proud our guys kept playing hard when the game got close early in the third quarter,” Thompson said. “Overall we played a better game and our defense looked better than last week.”
North Montgomery totaled 284 yards which included 219 passing yards.
The Charger defense held the Panthers to 255 yards.
The Chargers (1-1) will travel to Southmont (1-1) on Friday for a county rival battle and Monon Athletic Conference opener for both teams.
