Civic band concert to focus on Indiana Connections

Posted

The Montgomery County Civic Band’s concert on Sunday will feature the theme “Indiana Connections.”

The 3 p.m. concert will be held at Lane Place and will open with “Lane Place March,” written by Indiana composer Malinda Zenor. Zenor is the mother of the band’s current conductor, Cindy McCormick. Another of Zenor’s compositions, “Sugar Creek Rag,” also will be performed.

Celebrating Kokomo’s reputation as the “City of Firsts” for innovations in the automotive industry, the band will perform a new composition, “Spirit of Innovation.” Two local businesses contributed to the automotive-themed percussion sounds featured in the piece. Booth Machinery donated a differential gear and NAPA Auto Parts donated a brake drum.

Music by Indiana composers Cole Porter, Hoagy Carmichael and Fred Jewell will take listeners to Peru, Bloomington and Worthington. The concert also will highlight Vincennes native Red Skelton, best known as a comedian but also a prolific composer credited with writing thousands of songs and 64 symphonies. The band will perform his “Kadiddlehopper March.”

The trombone section will be featured in “Trombone Blues,” while the French horn section will perform “Horn-A-Plenty.” “Salute to Television” will pay tribute to classic television shows through their recognizable theme songs.

The concert will conclude with two songs closely associated with Indiana. Audience members will be invited to sing along to “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” and “Back Home Again in Indiana.”

The concert is free, although donations to support the band are appreciated. Attendees are encouraged to bring chairs or blankets for seating.
