Companies in compliance with tax abatements

The Montgomery County Council gave a checkup Tuesday to solar parks and other industries that receive tax abatements, as part of the yearly review process for the economic incentives.

In a series of resolutions, the council determined the Darlington and Waynetown solar parks, Nucor Steel and Steel Technologies were in compliance with the requirements of the abatements.

Tax abatements allow companies to phase in full property tax payments on facilities or equipment over a period of years while bringing in more jobs or expanding operations. The companies agree to hire a set number of employees during the period.

In other business, the council:

• Approved recommendations from the ERPS committee to change the salary classification for a pre-trial administrator, who is a paralegal, in the prosecutor’s office. The administrator will be paid an additional $500 per year beginning in 2021, and will receive half of the extra salary this year.

• Appointed councilman Don Mills to serve on the Regional Sewer Board. Mills replaces councilman Terry Hockersmith, who resigned from the sewer board.

• Re-appointed Brian Keim to serve another four-year term on the Crawfordsville District Public Library board.

The council’s next regular meeting is set for 9 a.m. Aug. 11 in compliance with public health emergency protocols at that time.
