Concerts on the Corner is excited and privileged to present a free concert for peace and justice at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, with music by singer songwriters Bobbie Lancaster and Tim Grimm, and readings by Alissa Branch. The concerts are held at Wabash Avenue Presbyterian Church, 307 S. Washington St.
Lancaster resides in Putnam County and appears with a strong following throughout Indiana and beyond. Lancaster’s songs span the genres of folk, gospel, and children’s music. Her newest projects focus boldly on social justice in today’s world. Lancaster will release her 11th album this year along with her first children’s book, which she says she has written because now is the time to raise our voices for future generations and for those who cannot raise their own. Her lyrics offend some, while flooding others with hope and the reminder that resistance rooted in love for humankind still has the power to bend the arc towards justice.
Tim Grimm has forged a rich and varied career that blends his love of songwriting, travel, and acting. His music and storytelling, in the tradition of Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan, is often framed by his strong sense of place, and his love of the rolling hills, woods, and folk with whom he grew up in rural Indiana. Grimm has toured with well known artists such as Carrie Newcomer and was a collaborator on the Wilderness Plots project with stories from noted author Scott Russell Sanders.
Alissa Branch is a visual and theatrical artist. Her extensive career as an actor, director, voice-over artist, and educator has specialized in Shakespeare. Working primarily with acrylic paint and oil pastel Branch incorporates paper scraps — pages from Shakespeare, favorite song lyrics, newsprint, vintage dress patterns, and personal notes. She shows her work at The Venue Gallery in Bloomington. She will perform a variety of readings on Sunday.
Grimm and Branch are world travelers and lead yearly tours of Scotland with his company, Scotland Folk Tours and tours of Ireland through Inishfree Irish Music Tours. They also will begin leading small group music tours of Italy this fall.
A spokesperson from Wabash Avenue Church said the purpose of the Concerts on the Corner, in its fourth year of operation, is to spread the love of God through the joy of music. All are welcome.
As always this Sunday’s concert is free, with free-will contributions going to IndianaAid (Assistance to Immigrants in Detention), an all-volunteer organization that supports through direct aid, virtual visits, and family resources individuals held in ICE custody in Indiana.
