Countdown to property tax payment deadline

Montgomery County Treasurer offers essential information for homeowners

Posted

The Montgomery County property tax statements were mailed April 14. With property tax bills arriving in mailboxes every April, homeowners have a unique opportunity to prepare by reviewing their payment options and understanding their financial responsibilities. As the mid-May deadline for property tax payments approaches, residents of Montgomery County are urged to act swiftly to fulfill their tax obligations and avoid penalties. This year, the deadline for paying spring property taxes without incurring penalties is set for May 12.

Property tax statements serve as crucial documents that provide taxpayers with detailed information about what they owe and when payments are due. These statements include payment coupons for both spring and fall deadlines, ensuring clarity for homeowners. “Being informed about your property tax obligations is essential,” says Heather Laffoon, Montgomery County Treasurer. “We want to make it as easy as possible for residents to understand their statements and meet their deadlines.”

Understanding
Your Tax Statement

It’s imperative for homeowners to recognize that they are entitled to receive a tax statement, regardless of whether their balance is zero or if a mortgage company is managing their payments. If the tax statements are marked “in escrow,” property owners do not need to send any payment or correspondence to the Treasurer’s Office, simplifying the process for many.

Taxpayers are encouraged to research their specific parcels and current balances through designated online resources. They can access this information via the county website at www.montgomerycounty.in.gov or www.beacon.schneidercorp.com. These platforms offer real-time information, ensuring residents are well-informed ahead of the deadline.

Exploring Payment Options

Homeowners have several convenient options to consider when making their property tax payments:

In-Person Payments:

Taxpayers can visit the Treasurer’s Office at the Montgomery County Government Center, which is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Our office will be closed Friday, April 18 in observance of Good Friday. Starting Spring 2025, payments will be accepted only in cash, checks, money orders, or cashier’s checks. Please note our office will no longer be processing credit or debit cards (see credit/debit card payments below).

Drop Box Service:

A secure drop box is available on the south side of the County Government Center for taxpayers wishing to submit payments without entering the office. It is checked multiple times a day for security. It is advisable to place payments in an envelope clearly marked with identifying taxpayer information.

Mail Payments:

Payments can be mailed directly to the Treasurer’s Office. Residents should include a self-addressed stamped envelope to receive a receipt quickly.

Local Bank Payments:

First Financial, Hoosier Heartland, and Tri-County branch locations accept tax payments during the tax season. Taxpayers must bring their payment coupon to ensure proper processing.

Credit/Debit Card or Echeck Payments:

For those who prefer making payments online, taxpayers can utilize the county website to pay via credit/debit card or e-check, although service fees will apply. Payments can also be made over the phone at 1-855-276-8051 using their valid parcel number.

Note that paying via credit or debit incurs a 2.95% service fee, while e-checks have a reduced fee of $0.95 per transaction.

Preparing for the Deadline

As the May 12 deadline nears, it is vital for homeowners to understand the diverse options available for property tax payments. Failing to meet the deadline can result in penalties, adding unnecessary stress to what should be a straightforward process. “Preparation is key,” Laffoon said. “We encourage residents to take action now to secure their financial responsibilities and alleviate any last-minute anxiety.”

For further assistance and details, residents are encouraged to visit the county’s official website or contact the Treasurer’s Office directly.

As the countdown continues, the importance of timely property tax payments cannot be overstated — secure your financial responsibilities today to ensure a stress-free tomorrow.
