The Crawfordsville District Public Library will host a Creative Aging Workshop to explore how arts activities like quilting, gardening, and music-making can enrich elder well-being.

The program, hosted in partnership with Indiana University’s Traditional Arts Indiana and Indiana Humanities, will be held 10:30 a.m. to noon Sept. 23 at CDPL. Led by folklorist and TAI director Jon Kay, the session highlights how creative pursuits help older adults resist isolation, boredom, and helplessness and will teach strategies to identify an art form that is right for each participant.

“Folk arts and traditions have always been a tool for creative fulfillment and community connection,” said Megan Telligman, director of programs at Indiana Humanities. “These workshops are an opportunity to encourage older adults to explore creative practices while connecting with others in their communities.”

Participants in the program will leave with a toolkit of actionable
activities for both individuals and groups, as well as profiles of people who engage with a variety of traditional arts and knowledge to help them thrive in later life.

“Attending the Creative Aging Workshop is a great way to meet like-minded people and spark interesting conversations. We want to encourage our whole community to add creative activities to their schedules regardless of their abilities, age, or skill level. The library is a fantastic place to pursue creative endeavors,” said Toni Ridgway-Woodall.

This workshop is for individuals 55 years of age or older. Registration is required for each attendee and can be completed online at https://cdpl.assabetinteractive.com/calendar/creative-aging-workshop/ or by calling the library at 765-362-2242. Space is limited.

The Creative Aging Workshop will travel to several other cities across Indiana. Applications to host a workshop are available on Indiana Humanities’ website here: https://indianahumanities.wufoo.com/forms/q1qe916e0q6wzw0/.

The program is supported by the Allen Whitehill Clowes Charitable Foundation, Indiana Arts Commission, and the National Endowment for the Arts. To learn more about the program, visit https://indianahumanities.org/program/creative-aging/.
