End of life educator to speak

Posted

Caring for a loved one as they approach the end of life is not the same as caring for someone we expect to get better. Caregivers experience a wide array of emotions — sadness, worry, fear, anger, loneliness, helplessness and hopelessness to name just a few. Caregivers are on call 24/7 and tend to sacrifice their own needs for adequate sleep, good nutrition, socialization and even medical care to devote all their time and energy into meeting the needs of their loved one.

Even one’s relationship as a loving spouse or child is overshadowed by their newfound role of caregiver. It is common to lose one’s identity as we experience the grief in anticipation of the impending death. Few people understand the intense stress of caregiving, until they find themselves in that role.

With a grant from the Montgomery County Community Foundation, Dusk to Dawn Bereavement Services is hosting nationally recognized award-winning end of life educator Barbara Karnes to help address these concerns. New Rules for End of Life Care: A Conversation with Barbara Karnes will take place at 6 p.m. Jan. 18 in Luther Hall of Christ Lutheran Church, 300 W. South Blvd. The learning event will include a catered meal at 5:30 p.m. Following her brief presentation, Karnes will personally address participants’ questions in this highly informative and interactive program. The program is open to professional caregivers and family caregivers as well. If you or someone you know is providing care for another, you will not want to miss this event.
