FOOTBALL: Warriors dominate Athenians

Posted

DANVILLE – The long bus ride to Danville was followed by an even longer one home after the Athenians lost 56-0 to the Warriors.

“Danville is an excellent team,” Crawfordsville coach Kurt Schlicher said. “They are well-coached and they did pretty much what they wanted to.”

With a handful of offensive starters not suited up, the Athenians were short-handed.

Four starters were already out, and two more were sidelined during the game.

That made for a bad stats night, as the visitors finished with a net of three yards.

Kaigen Fields, the Athenians leading rusher the first three weeks, suffered a shoulder injury in the first quarter and had only four carries.

Bryce Dowell came in and ran for nine yards on six carries to lead C'ville. When sack yards are deducted from the totals, they finished with three net rush yards.

Kaiden Underwood was the focus of Danville's defensive attention, as the sophomore was sacked four times and finished with four interceptions under pressure.

He was 4-of-16 for zero net yards. Nate Schroeter had the only catch for positive yards, as two of the top three receivers, Mikale Willis and Alex Hernandez, were not in uniform.

The Warriors put 28 points on the board in the first quarter and never looked back.

They finished with 299 rush yards and 157 through the air.

Quarterback Kale Payne was 9-of-12 passing for the 157 yards and two scores. He was intercepted once, by Ethan McLemore.

“McLemore had a very strong game, especially for a freshman,” Schlicher said. “Moises Mora also did an excellent job on defense.”

Danville's rush game was led by Matthew McGovern, as the junior had 128 yards on seven carries.

“We are going to show up tomorrow and get back to work,” Schlicher said. “There is a lot of season left hopefully and we will start planning for Southmont next Friday.”

The Warriors have a Sagamore matchup with Tri-West next Friday while Crawfordsville and South tangle in a county and conference affair.
