Gather for Halloween, harvest happenings

Posted

As the full moon has passed and leaves begin to fall, Montgomery County offers something for one and all! There are pumpkin patches, costume contests and craft nights too. There are special events just waiting for you. Though the long list is incomplete, it offers many chances for tricks and treats. So, grab your pen and circle a few; there are many Halloween things to do.

Let us start by making your porch “gourd-geous” and picking a perfect pumpkin or two. Bit of Wild on State Road 47 South has many mums, pumpkins, gourds and fresh cider to kick off the season. Look for Skully, the 12-foot skeleton, standing next to the road. On the weekends, you might try Oak Hill Tree Farm. They have pumpkins galore and a corn maze too.

Practice making a jack-o-lantern so you will be ready for the Francis & Mount’s Pumpkin Carving Contest on Oct. 23. The contest is for both young and old. Reserve your spot for a carving kit now. You can also show off your pumpkin carving skills at Second City Cafe’s Pumpkin Party Night. A free food buffet, Halloween movie trivia and family-friendly activities are sure to be spooktacular.

Are you feeling crafty? The Shop Small Shop Handmade in Linden offers three classes this month for your Halloween décor. Check them out to chalk a door tag, create some haunted ceramics or paint a spooky cat wine glass. Reservations and fees are required.

First Baptist Church on Sunday evening will host a Harvest Party. It will include free food, games and prizes for the whole family. The Boys & Girls Club of Montgomery County will hold a Fall Festival later Oct. 28 with bounce houses, food trucks and games galore. A chili cook-off and pumpkin fest on Oct. 29 at Christi Hubler Chevrolet sounds delicious.

Are you looking for something a little different? The Carnegie Museum will present the Science of Brains. Real brains will be on view as you learn more about how the brain works. Join the new sci-fi/fantasy/horror-themed book club, Wyrd Words, at the Crawfordsville District Public Library. The first book, “A Night in Lonesome October” by Zelazny, is available at the circulation desk.

Halloween is not just for kids. Adult-only events are available. Emporium 109 in Ladoga will host a Witches, Wizards & Wild Things Costume Party with creepy food and drink specials. The Animal Welfare League sponsors a “Howl-O-Ween” party at the 4-H fairgrounds. The festivities include dinner, mobile escape rooms, a silent auction, and live entertainment.

You have many opportunities if it is mostly about the candy in your Halloween heart. Bickford Memory Care kicks off the Trunk or Treat celebrations early. Everyone is welcome to participate on the evening of Oct. 19. Whitesville Christian Church and the Crawfordsville School Transportation department will pass out candy Oct. 29. The Crawfordsville Moose Family Center will hold a kid’s party followed by an adult party that same night. Woodland Heights Christian Church will have its candy giveaway on All Hallows Eve, followed by Friendship Baptist Church on Halloween.
