GIRLS BASKETBALL: Athenians dominated by Red Devils

Posted

It was a night the Crawfordsville girls basketball team will want to put in the rearview mirror. The team hosted the West Lafayette Red Devils and were defeated by a final score of 75-18. The Athenians were never able to figure out the Red Devils full-court trap defense. That defense combined with 31 Athenian turnovers allowed the Red Devils to get a double-digit lead within the first few minutes and they never look back.

“We just simply didn’t bring it tonight,” Coach Tyler Smith said. “It’s been a rough week and a half after we played so well in the Sugar Creek Classic. This is a tough portion of our schedule but there are still parts of our game plan that we haven’t executed. West Lafayette is a great team but we don’t feel like they’re 57 points better than us. When things go wrong you don’t have time at this level, you have to correct it quickly.”

Taylor Abston led the Athenians (1-5) with six points. Shea Williamson added in five. Liddy McCarty recorded three points and both Kearston Hutchins and Jayda Roach added two points each.

Kennedy Martin led all scorers with 22 points for the Red Devils. Adrianne Tolen added 19 and Sarah Werth recorded 14.

“Going forward we just have to have a confidence level about us no matter who is on the schedule,” Smith said. “You can’t come into the day and game expecting to lose and expecting bad things to happen. If you do that you don’t stand a chance. No matter who we face we just have to play our game. Even if we can be competitive against those good teams then that will help us grow for these more winnable games coming up.”

The Athenians will be back in action on Saturday afternoon as they host Attica at 12:30 p.m.
