GIRLS SOCCER: Mounties defense shines in 3-0 shutout of Frankfort

NEW MARKET — Southmont’s defense was flawless and Lexie Odum did what she does best offensively in a 3-0 shutout win over Sagamore Conference foe Frankfort on Tuesday.

Odum added goals No. 11 and No. 12 on the season, and the defense limited the Hot Dogs to less than a dozen shots on the night.

“I’m really impressed with how we are playing overall as a team,” Southmont first-year coach Phillip Keller said. “I think we are doing really well. We are really focusing on connecting some passes on the offensive side, and focusing on not stabbing on the defensive side of things. Doing more containing and letting them mess up, instead of trying to steal the ball and then we mess up.”

The Mounties improve to 4-3 overall and 2-3 in SAC play with the win, and got contributions from players at every position in the win that dropped Frankfort to 3-4-1 overall, and 1-2 in league action.

Senior Sierra Riddle put Southmont on the board late in the first half with her first-career goal. Sophomore Belle Miller had six saves in goal, and the Mountie’s mid-field helped dominate the time of possession.

“I think that our midfield does a really great job,” Keller said. “Our middle players, Addi Charles, Chloe Lynn, and Emalie Ayers. They all do a really nice job for us out there. They are some key pieces that connects the whole team on the field. If they’re playing well, our defense is playing well and our offense plays well.”

Odum scored both her goals in the second half.

As Southmont approaches the midway point in the season, Keller is seeing more and more consistent effort and play from his entire team.

“Being comfortable on the ball is one of the most important things,” he said. “If we aren’t comfortable out in our positions, and we aren’t comfortable with what we are doing, it’s going to surely show and it’s going to be a big thing that holds us back. I think getting everyone comfortable and understanding their role on the field. Obviously not everyone can be the one to go score the goals, and not everyone can be the one to go save the goals, so we’ve got to understand our position is essential, and we have to understand how to best our position in order to better the team.”

After an 0-2 start with SAC losses to Western Boone and Lebanon, the Mounties have won four out of their last five and will travel to Greencastle on Thursday.

“I think the losses to Webo and Lebanon were tough losses,” Keller added. “It’s a great learning experience. It gave me a lot to see what we specifically need to work on. We changed the formation to something they’re a little more used to. We’ve done things that they can feel comfortable doing, because again they’re comfortability on the field is going to be essential for their success.”
