GIRLS TENNIS PREVIEW: Chargers were last area tennis team standing in 2019

Posted

In 2019 North Montgomery won its third-straight girls’ tennis sectional title.

But with a canceled 2020 season, the Chargers are in a similar place to other local teams — returning very little varsity experience and an entire lost season of development.

“Several of my upperclassmen missed out on a year of varsity experience,” North Montgomery coach Shannon Collier said. “That experience would have helped lead us this year. They are working hard in practice to gain back the flow and feel of competition. The team is also getting to know one another again and working on essential communication skills that will help us during critical points.”

Senior Kaitlin Greenlee and junior Allison Guard are the top two returners for North Montgomery.

“Kaitlin Greenlee brings two years of experience as a senior,” Collier said. “In her 2019 season, she went 14-3 so she knows what it takes to be successful at the varsity level. Allison Guard also has a year under her belt. Their words of advice and encouragement for their teammates will be beneficial.”

Senior Joy Davis and juniors Carlie Desmet, Courtney Engels, and Sydnee Turner are expected to help fill out the lineup. Collier also expects several new players to compete for the final varsity spot.

North Montgomery opens the season on Wednesday, April 7 at Harrison.

“The team is very excited to be back on the court,” Collier added. “They are staying optimistic and enthusiastic for the upcoming season. This season feels like a celebration as we return to athletic competition.”
