FRANKFORT — Southmont Coach Desson Hannum watched his team take over Friday’s game at Frankfort with a dominating second half resulting in a 42-6 win. Watching the victory was the 100th time the coach’s Mountie teams have won a game.
“It is a good feeling to get the 100th win,” Hannum said. “It really is a result of the teams buying in and caring about Mountie Football.”
Hannum is in his 20th season as head coach of Southmont. The Dean of Coaches of the Monon Athletic Conference often downplays his success with the Mounties.
“All this means is that I have been around a long time,” Hannum has said numerous times. “It is all the players I have been fortunate to coach that made the 100th win. This is a credit to them.”
Southmont got off to a slow start and led just 7-6 at the end of the first quarter. A 14-point second quarter game the Mounties breathing room and leading 21-6.
“I don’t know why, but we got off to a slow start,” Hannum said. “Maybe it is because we are young team coming off a big win last week against North Montgomery. Our guys will learn we need to play from the start.”
Southmont responded with 21 third quarter points to earn a running clock game.
Leading the Mountie offense was running back Kasen Bushong with 228 rushing yards on 21 rushes. The sophomore found paydirt five times in the game.
Southmont had 375 total yards which included 51 passing yards from Hanum’s sophomore son and quarterback Eli Hannum.
The offense was slowed at times by losing two of five fumbles.
Southmont’s defense held Frankfort to just a total of 65 yards. The Hot Dogs had 11 passing yards and 54 rushing yards.
Frankfort did not have a play that covered more than nine yards during the game.
The Hot Dog score came on the opening kickoff when sophomore Jayden Davis returned the kick 94 yards for the touchdown.
“Our defense did a nice job of stopping Frankfort,” Hannum said. “We gave up the score on the opening kick, but overall we played really good defense.”
Southmont (3-1, 2-0 MAC) will travel Friday to county and MAC rival Crawfordsville (2-2, 0-2 MAC) for the Athenian’s annual Homecoming game.
