Holocaust survivor to speak April 8

Posted

The Greater Lafayette Holocaust Remembrance Committee will interview Sam Wachs, a Holocaust survivor, during its spring 2021 conference.

Wachs’ presentation from Israel, “A Survivor’s Journey: Present to Past to Future,” will be held at noon April 8 via Zoom. A live Q&A will follow. The entire presentation will be reshown on April 13 at
7 p.m.

Wachs was a small boy when his father was murdered by the Nazis. He and his mother went into hiding on a farm in their village in Poland. His mother was discovered and taken from him, but the farmer’s wife carried Wachs to his aunt, who was the cook in a forced labor camp nearby. Wachs lived out the war in that camp and then, with his aunt, Bronia, emigrated to Argentina where they began their lives anew.

As an adult and a widower, Wachs emigrated to Israel with his two sons. There he met a woman from his village who filled in some of the missing pieces from his early life.
