John C. Clarkston, 79, formerly of Cates and rural Hillsboro, passed away at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, 2023, at The Waters of Covington.
John was born Dec. 25, 1943, at Lafayette, the son of Lawrence Clarkston and Juanita (Burke) Murray. He married Wanda L. Towell on March 30, 1963, at Cates. She preceded him in death Aug. 22, 2021.
He was also preceded by his parents; sister Dixie Sowers; and two brothers, Larry Clarkston and Kenny Clarkston.
Surviving family include: two daughters, Linda (Ron) Walls, Evansville, and Buffy (Randy) White, Covington; son Ed (Lori) Clarkston, Hillsboro; two brothers, Jack (Laura) Clarkston, Kingman, and Howard (Shirley) Clarkston, Advance, Missouri; six grandchildren, Kyle (Brittany) Stanton, Kari (Brandon) McNeely, Cassie (Nathan) Lea, Aaron (Jessica) White, Caden (Emily) Lynn and Abby (Ross) Columbia; and 10 great-grandchildren.
John loved working on cars and was employed most of his life as a mechanic. He was able to repair anything in the garage or the house. Over the years he helped family and friends with lots of projects and made sure to tell stories of how it was done. Along with working in his own garage and operating a small grocery store, he had worked at Swing Wing Inc. near Veedersburg and Custom Farm Service in Cates.
Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 16 at Dickerson Funeral Home, Veedersburg. A funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. Oct. 16 at the funeral home. Burial will be at Coal Creek (Snoddy’s) Cemetery near Stringtown.
Memorial contributions may be given to Coal Creek Cemetery.
