LOCAL ROUNDUP: Athenians, Mounties, Mustangs pick up tennis wins, Cville volleyball stays unbeaten, Mountie golf wins

Athenians notch first tennis win

The Crawfordsville boys’ tennis team picked up its first win of the season defeating Sagamore Conference rival Lebanon 3-2 on Tuesday.

Wyatt Motz defeated Matthew Barber at No. 2 singles 6-3, 6-0, while the duo of Jude Hutchison and Thomas Bowling won 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2 doubles. James Novak inked the match-decisive win at No. 3 singles, defeating Jackson Shepherd 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.

“James Novak stepped up in a big way tonight to get our third win in a three-set shootout,” Crawfordsville coach Craig Brainard said. “He fought all the way to the end. My hope is that this inspires the team to keep fighting in future matches.”

James Murphy fell to John Gascho 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, while Thatcher Gambrel and Ziair Morgan lost 6-3, 6-2 to Reece Guyman and Jack Ferrell at No. 1 doubles.

Mounties sweep Hot Dogs

The Southmont boys’ tennis team moved to 7-2 on the season and 3-0 in the Sagamore Conference with a 5-0 win over Frankfort on Tuesday.

Adam Cox beat Jake Swinford 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, while Luke Tesmer beat Edwin Wainscott 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 singles, and Hayden Hess beat Aidan Hudspith 6-0, 6-2 in the No. 3 slot.

The duo of Mason Hall and Caden Jones beat Elijah West and El Grasham 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 doubles and Harrison Haddock and Chayce Howell beat Jackson Ray and Isai Jimenez 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles.

Mustangs sweep Eagles

The Fountain Central boys’ tennis team swept South Putnam 5-0 on Tuesday.

Skyler Hoagland beat Trystan Smithers 7-5, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, while Gabe McCollum beat Tanner Smithers 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 singles and Noah Armstrong beat Jacob Beadles 7-5, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.

The duo of Carter Merryman and Brayden Prickett beat Ben Teipen and Logan Starks 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles, while Wes Jackson and Koby Wolf beat Luke Hutcheson and Steven Theis 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles.


Boys Soccer

Mounties fall to Tiger Cubs

The Southmont boys’ soccer team fell 4-1 to Greencastle on Tuesday. Tyler Petroski scored the lone Mountie goal.

Girls Golf

Mounties win on senior night

The Southmont girls’ golf team defeated North Putnam 178-230 on senior night at the Crawfordsville Country Club on Tuesday.

The Mounties celebrated seniors Bailey Barker, Taylor Grino, and Macie Shirk.

Addison Meadows was the meet medalist with a 37, while Shirk fired a 43 and Grino a 48. Barker shot a 50, Stella Snook a 54, Kelsey Thompson a 59 and Yasa Deverall a 61.

Athenians fall to Tigers

The Crawfordsville girls’ golf team fell 258-175 on Tuesday at Ulen Country Club.

Carli Payne led the Athenians with a 54.

Girls Soccer

Athenians fall to Warriors

The Crawfordsville girls’ soccer team fell to Sagamore Conference foe Danville 7-0 on Tuesday.

Volleyball

Athenians sweep Falcons

The Crawfordsville volleyball team beat North Vermillion 3-0 (25-13, 25-5, 25-10) on Tuesday night.

Laine Schlicher led the Athenians with 35 assists, three kills, two digs, and two blocks, while Macy Bruton had 20 kills, four digs, and two aces. Shea Williamson added six digs, three kills, and an ace. Alyx Bannon had two aces, two digs, and a kill, and Halle Elliott seven digs and four aces. Olivia Reed aded 13 digs, Hallie Gayler eight kills and two blocks, Taedyn Cook three kills and Liddy McCarty two kills and two digs. Crawfordsville is now 11-0.

Mounties fall to Bruins

The Southmont volleyball team fell 3-0 (25-7, 25-14, 25-5) on Tuesday.

Chelsea Veatch led the Mounties with seven blocks, four assists, and three kills. Elizabeth Conkright added four assists and Tayler Anderson five digs.
