Active Voters Service Committee of the League of Women Voters encourages all registered voters to vote. The voter participation campaign, chaired by Myra Dunn Abbott, is divided into three parts.
First, LWV members will deliver information cards with a holder to all the small towns in the county and in Crawfordsville. The information cards provide election day voting centers which for the last election included: Rock Point Church, Friendship Baptist Church, North Montgomery High School, St. Bernard’s Catholic Church and Whitesville Church.
The Information cards and holders will be placed in several locations including banks, businesses and other gathering places. Residents can pick up a card that tell you where and when to vote. Because everyone in Montgomery County can vote in any of the locations, it is imperative citizens know the dates, times and locations including on election day.
Early voting will be available at a number of locations in Montgomery County. Locations and times will be listed on this website www.indianavoters.org. But people can also vote by mail. If someone is not able to travel to a voting center, it is possible to vote by mail. Call 765-364-6437 to ask for a ballot to be mailed to your address. A ballot and postage-paid envelope will be sent so a person does not need to travel to a vote center on election day.
In the last election, the committee located businesses that had electronic signs. Possible “vote” slogans were circulated, and the committee encouraged businesses to develop other slogans. The response was terrific as it encouraged citizens to vote. Great coverage from the two local newspapers and radio stations helped. The League hopes to continue this effort.
A third prong turned out more successful than anticipated. Two temporary signs were installed on the lawn of the courthouse. Armed with the total number of registered voters in Montgomery County, the plan was to compare this number daily during early voting and election day to the number of citizens who had voted. The two signs were updated each evening. People began talking about this new daily number, circulated it through texts, emails and word of mouth. This information went viral as people challenged their family and friends to vote.
The LWV Active Voter Service Committee will be gearing up for the 2020 elections in early March. Look for us as the Leaguers will gladly register citizens to vote, turn in the form and provide election voting information — because that is who we are — the LWVoters.
