When school athletic directors and administrators decided to form the Monon Athletic Conference, the goal was to achieve balance and parity within the member schools. The conference teams battle for a total of 16 conference championships.
A look at the first conference champions appears the goal has been accomplished. Six of the eight conference schools won at least one championship.
Crawfordsville had a good first year in the MAC tying Cascade with six crowns. Four of the championships were earned by Athenian girls teams. The Athenians were crowned champions in girls track and field, girls soccer, boys tennis, boys swimming and diving, girls tennis and girls track and field.
Cascade won, or tied, for six championships. The Cadets were champions in boys track and field, softball, football, boys cross country, boys basketball and tied for baseball.
Greencastle finished with five championships. The Tiger Cubs were tops in boys soccer, volleyball, boys golf and tied in baseball and tied in boys basketball.
Southmont placed first in girls basketball and boys wrestling.
North Montgomery lone championship was in girls swimming and diving.
Neither North Putnam nor Frankfort claimed a conference championship.
