A man accused of forcing his roommate into a vehicle while armed with a machete in Tippecanoe County and driving him to Crawfordsville last week made his first court appearance Tuesday.

Adam B. Kenny, 35, Lafayette, was being held on felony charges of kidnapping and criminal confinement in the Montgomery County Jail on a $6,000 cash bond, which a judge denied a request to reduce.

Officers were called to the 700 block of Parke Avenue on March 26 looking for a vehicle involved in an alleged kidnapping where a weapon was involved, Crawfordsville Police Chief Mike Norman said.

Kenny was inside the vehicle with the victim and a female relative when officers arrived, Norman said, adding that the suspect emerged from the vehicle unarmed without incident.

It wasn’t clear why the victim was taken to Crawfordsville.

Montgomery Circuit Court Judge Harry Siamas entered preliminary not-guilty pleas for the charges on Kenny’s behalf, according to court records. Appearing by video from the jail, Kenny said he planned to hire an attorney.

A trial date was set for 8:30 a.m. June 2.

Kenny had posted bond from the Tippecanoe County Jail on a felony intimidation charge three days before the incident, court records show.

On the same day as the alleged kidnapping, misdemeanor charges of battery resulting in bodily injury and disorderly conduct were also filed against Kenny in Tippecanoe County.

Earlier this month, the Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Office seized a firearm from Kenny under Indiana’s red flag law. A judge set an April 3 hearing to determine whether the weapon will be returned.
