Maple Grove Extension Homemakers

President Judy McBride opened the meeting, which was held at the Waynetown Baptist Church with a welcome to seven members. Sandy Lightle had an inspiration on negative thoughts and how our brains connect with them. So, we need to concentrate on positive attitudes, stay connected with people, ask for help when needed and to stay cheerful.

We all recited the pledges, the Homemaker’ Creed and our Mission statement. Roll call was answered by stating if “we had ever picked a dandelion and then blew all the seeds off and made a wish” and also how we are doing since COVID had entered our lives.

We did not have any birthdays this month. Janet Fagan did have an anniversary.

Lou Rosen’s granddaughter, Carrie Hall, brought Lou to the meeting after their lunch and Carrie told us about her business, Mae Lou Designs, and how she got started in making leather purses. She lives in Utah and was here on a visit.

Lightle read the minutes from the last meeting, which was in November and the report was accepted as read. Treasurer’s report was given by McBride in Betty Jeffers absence. All dues were collected as well as coins for Friendship in the amount of $53 and $48 in nickels for Indiana leadership. We also collected $206.55 for the Zero Hunger Challenge which will be sent to the state. A motion was made by Lightle and seconded by Kirkpatrick to donate $50 to the Waynetown Baptist Church for letting us have our meetings in their facility.

McBride read a note from Judy Gainey from “ABC’s of Medicare” thanking us for allowing her to talk with us about the “dos and don’ts” of Medicare at our November meeting. Achievement Night will be May 11 and the doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and the meal will be at 6 p.m. Cultural Art exhibits need to be at the 4-H building on May 10 between 4-5 p.m. Each chapter will also donate a door prize to be given away. The program will be presented by Hannah Wheeler who was a Southmont graduate and has performed in many cities in the United States with her beautiful voice. New officers were elected for the coming year: Sandra Lightle, president; Carol Vice, vice president; Betty Jeffers, treasurer; Rita Kirkpatrick, secretary and public relations; Eileen Matricia, health and safety; Minnie Howard, membership; and co-song leaders Carol Crowder and Linda Miller. They will be installed at our June meeting.

A report from the council meeting informed us that grants are being written for remodeling the kitchen in the 4-H building and also for the bathroom. Both areas are in need of a lot of repair work.

The State Homemakers Conference will be held June 1-3 at the Embassy Suites in Plainfield. Judy Tully has registration forms and will be happy to send you one if you would like to attend all or part of the conference.

Matricia gave a health and Ssafety report on the pandemic. There was a great deal of discussion after the report.

They were needing security workers for the 4-H Fair on July 20 to work two-hour shifts and Tully and Lightle, McBride and Vice, and Howard and Carol Crowder volunteered for this duty.

The next meeting will be at 1:30 p.m. May 17 at the home of Lightle. The June meeting will be a picnic and installations of new officers.

The meeting was closed with members reciting the club collect. Refreshments were served and there was a great deal of chatting, laughing and socializing done.
