Crawfordsville and Southmont kicked off the Journal Review County Chase race in a thrilling way with a 4-3 Mounties come from behind win in boys soccer on Thursday night.
Southmont picked up right where they left off from last spring when they clinched their first County Chase title, and the close contest proved that we could be in for a very tight race all school year.
Just taking a quick look at what is in store for the fall, all indications point toward Crawfordsville and North Montgomery continuing to chase Southmont in the standings, but the battle for second place will likely prove to be important as winter and spring near.
Southmont is the reigning county champs in girls golf and volleyball, and looks to be the hottest teams in both sports once again this fall, but lookout for Crawfordsville volleyball. The Athenians are off to a 4-3 start in volleyball, while Crawfordsville and North Montgomery have both produced top rounds of golf that could push the Mounties during the county meet here in a couple weeks.
Next week things really start to heat up in the county chase, and we will get a better understanding of who the team to beat will be. North Montgomery and Southmont will face off in both boys and girls soccer, volleyball, and football.
The most interesting sport this fall to follow in my opinion will be football. I have in my head who I think should win, but I believe by the time all three schools square off against each they will all be fairly equal.
I think it was an easy pick to put up Southmont as the favorites to repeat as the County Chase champions this school year, but North Montgomery will look to be competitive for a fifth straight year, and I truly believe Crawfordsville will really push for their first title throughout the year.
If Crawfordsville and Southmont’s soccer match was any indication of what’s to come, this is going to be a really fun year for Montgomery County sports.
