Mock caucus seeks to educate voters

The Montgomery County Democratic Party and Club will convene the first-ever quadrennial mock presidential nominating caucus from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Masonic Cornerstone Event Center, 221 S. Washington St. All Democrats, independents and questioning, concerned Republicans are invited.

The mock caucus is designed for several purposes, said David Hadley, Montgomery County Democratic vice chair.

“We want to stimulate interest in and awareness of the 2020 presidential nominating process, and help the public learn more about the major candidates for the Democratic nomination in an interactive, fun, community setting,” Hadley said.

The caucus is designed to help people understand and experience the caucus process, even though Indiana holds a primary election. It also gives voters an opportunity to consider, talk to others about and express an early preference among the candidates if they have one.

The caucus will feature presentations for the six major Democratic candidates. After the presentations, people will gather in candidate groups, their numbers tabulated, and, if any candidates fail to get 15% of the registered participants, their supporters will join the caucus group of their second choice. Vote totals will be announced and publicized at the conclusion.

High school students interested in learning about the presidential nominating process and the 2020 election are invited to observe and participate in the caucus.
