Mounties advance to regional play

NEW MARKET — Southmont, champions of their own 2A Sectional No. 41, plays in the one-game regional today at Monrovia who won the 2A Sectional No. 42. The game is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Monrovia High School.

Southmont (18-5) won the 2A sectional by defeating South Putnam 3-1. Monrovia (14-14) defeated Indianapolis Cardinal Ritter 12-2 in for the sectional championship.

 

The Monrovia Bulldog File

Bulldog sophomore Camryn Wolfe leads an offense that averages 6.5 runs per game. In two sectional games, the Bulldogs scored 29 total runs in two games.

Wolfe leads her team with a .505 batting average and in stolen bases with 19. The shortstop has scored 33 runs on 47 hits.

Junior Nevaeh Dillon is the pitching leader for the Bulldogs with a 7-4 record. She has pitched 93.2 innings and has an ERA of 3.66. Opponents have accumulated a batting average of .307 this season. Dillon struck out 79 batters and walked 46 this season.

On offense, Dillon and freshman Brylee Stwalley each lead the Bulldogs with five home runs apiece.

Monrovia finished fourth in the Hoosier Legends Conference with a 5-5 record.

 

The Southmont Mountie File

Southmont has a record of 18-5 and is on a five-game winning streak.

Mountie Ella Barry is in the center of the Mountie offense and is the team’s top pitcher.

Barry has a batting average of .538 and has 10 home runs. The sophomore leads the Mounties with 35 hits, 35 RBI with a team-leading 11 doubles.

Barry enters the regional with a 16-3 pitching record. Her ERA is an outstanding 0.60. She has recorded 220 strikeouts with only 19 walks. Teams have a batting average of .129 this season.

Barry is surrounded by several talented players. Two of the team’s leaders are  sophomore Kaylee Turner who is batting .471 and junior Kenzi Clate who has a .432 batting average

Turner leads the Mounties with seven stolen bases and runs scored with 29. Turner and freshman Emily Simpson each have 17 RBI.

Tickets can be purchased with a card or cash at the gate. Admission is $10 if paying by cash or $10.95 online.

The winner of the Monrovia Regional will play at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Forest Park Semi-State against the winner of the Sullivan versus Tecumseh regional game. The 11 a.m. game at the Forest Park Semi-State will feature the winner of  Eastern Hancock and Northeastern against the regional winner between Brownstown Central and Salem.

The semi-state championship is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday.
