DOVER — Southmont’s offense struggled at Monon Athletic Conference rival Western Boone on Friday. The Stars dropped the Mounties 35-0.
The Stars held Southmont to just three first downs in the game. On the ground the Mounties had 40 yards on 24 rushes and 34 yards through the air for a total of 74 yards in the game.
Western Boone totaled 287 yards. Most of the yards came in the first half when the home team took a 35-0 lead into halftime.
The Stars took the opening kickoff and marched 80 yards fueled by the running of Jack Mallory. The junior toted the ball six times for 74 yards on the drive. Western Boone fullback Roen Shue scored from two yards out. A successful extra point kick by Benson Devol put the Stars up 7-0 and they would never look back.
After forcing a three and out, the Stars got the ball back on their own 34 yard line.
The Stars got a 42-yard run from Carson Nicely that placed the ball on the Mountie five yard line. Mallory topped the drive with a three-yard run into the endzone making the score 14-0.
After South’s second punt, the Stars scored on their third straight possession when Nicley scored from six yards out making the score 21-0 early in the second quarter.
After another Nicely touchdown put Western Boone up 28-0, the Stars defense got the ball back. Stars quarterback Quinn Westerfeild passed his team quickly down the field. Westerfeld found Beau Sawyer for a 30-yard scoring strike. After a successful kick, the Stars led 35-0 after scoring on all five of the first half possessions.
“Western Boone got off to the start they wanted and we did not,” Mountie Coach Dessan Hannum said. “Our guys were disappointed at halftime. Western Boone did a good job showing us different looks on defense which is what they do. We did not respond as we needed to.”
The second half was played with a running clock.
The Mounties had just three first downs in the game compared to Western Boone’s 18.
Leading Southmont was sophomore Kasen Bushong who totaled 47 yards on 15 carries.
Mountie sophomore quarterback Eli Hannum completed 5-of-10 passes for 34 yards.
Southmont (4-3, 3-2 MAC) has now lost two games in a row and will face MAC leader Cascade (6-1, 5-0 MAC) at Mountie Field on Friday.
