Mounties falter in final inning vs Stars

Posted

NEW MARKET — Southmont softball was three outs away from a big-time Sagamore Conference sweep of Western Boone on Tuesday as they led 3-2. However the Stars capitalized off of a pair of Southmont errors and scored two runs to take a 4-3 lead and held off the Mountie bats in the bottom of the inning to sneak out of New Market with a win.

Josalyn Lewis led off the top of the seventh with a single and advanced to second base on a throwing error. Gabby Lewis then tied the game at three by scoring Josalyn with another single back up the middle. After another Mountie error allowed Emma Shirley to reach and Gabby Lewis to to move down to third.

The game winning run for the Stars win Alaina Ward singled to bring home G. Lewis.

In the bottom of the seventh the Mounties wouldn’t go down without a fight as Taylor Grino and Macie Shirk both singled and the Mounties had runners on first and second with one out. Grino and courtesy runner Cheyenne Shaw were able to advance to third on a Chelsea Veatch fielders choice and that set the stage for senior Elizabeth Conkright. However Conkright would ground out to seal the comeback win for the Stars.

Shirk led the Mounties in the loss with a 3-4 day at the plate. Veatch added another pair of hits and Lillie Odum, Anna Stokes, Grino, Hanna Nichols, Conkright, and Brady Spencer all picked up an individual hit as South tallied 11 total.

On the mound Shirk would take the loss as she pitched a complete game allowing 10 hits and two earned runs while walking two and striking out four.

The Stars and the Mounties split their two meetings as the two teams could likely meet up in the sectional championship which is hosted by the Mounties next week.

South falls to 14-5 (9-4 SAC) with the loss. They will complete their conference and regular season schedule on Thursday as they make the short trip North to take on county rival North Montgomery.
