NEW MARKET — Southmont girls tennis was able to secure it’s first Sagamore Conference win of the season Thursday evening when they hosted the Frankfort Hot Dogs. South came away with a 4-1 win to improve their SAC record to 1-2 on the season.

The Mounties got on the board first when Marley Jones picked up a 6-1, 6-0 win at two singles. Haylee Hall and Jozee Jones made it 2-0 Mounties with a 6-0, 6-2 win at two doubles. Kela Johnson won at three singles 6-2, 6-1 and at doubles the duo of Courtlyn Carpenter and Oliva Surface were winners in three sets 4-6, 7-6, 6-1.

“It’s always nice when you can grab a conference win,” Southmont coach Rob Reimondo said. “There’s some very good competition for us and this is a good start for where we want to eventually be.”

The win for Johnson at three singles saw her continue her stellar undefeated junior season for the Mounties. Reimondo knows that going into nearly every single match, he knows he is going to get good things from her.

“She’s done her part for us this year,” he said. “We already knew that she was a great athlete coming into the season and now we’re really starting to see develop into a great tennis player. She’s been able lock down that spot all year and it’s something that we know we don’t have to worry about her.”

While the season may be in its final weeks, there is still plenty left to play for for the Mounites. South will conclude the final week of the regular season next by playing three straight SAC opponents. Next Tuesday they’l host WeBo, Thursday they’ll travel to county rival North Montgomery before hosting Lebanon next Friday to conclude the regular season.

“We just need to continue to work on minimizing our un-forced errors in this final week,” Reimondo said. “It comes down to us trying to be competitive in every single point and not take any of our opponents lightly. If we do those things then I think we’ll finish off strong.”
