New fitness center specializes in weight training

Last spring when Athena Sport & Fitness shut its doors, Monica and Adam Nagele had to find another place to train.

“When they announced that they were closing, we both kind of panicked [and thought], ‘What are we going to do?’” recalled Monica, a triathlete.

They contemplated starting a home gym, but set their sights instead on a new full-service fitness center specializing in weight training. Powerhouse Barbell & Fitness opened last week next to Stock + Field (formerly Big R) on South U.S. 231.

The 24-hour facility features a suite of training equipment including free-weights and cardio machines.

“Our conversations after they announced that the Athena was closing was that there is absolutely a need, not only just for us, but there was a lot of people just throwing around ideas of putting something together, and we decided we’d just pull through on it,” Adam, a power lifter, said.

“We’ve had so much interest and so much hype from people around the community that it’s really encouraging to know that we were absolutely right on that,” he added.

Adam began powerlifting in middle school in Oklahoma and competed with his family in state and national events. As an adult, he broke a world record with a 600 lb. squat with little to no additional equipment. He’s a mortgage loan officer at Hoosier Heartland State Bank.

A longtime runner, Monica recently began competing in triathlons as a runner, swimmer and biker. She is a registered dietitian and serves as extension educator and county extension director of health and human science for the Montgomery County Purdue Extension.

The center will host a Saturday morning spin class and plans to offer “boot-camp” style group fitness classes taught by personal trainer Casey Spencer that will not be included in the membership fee.

Spencer can also develop personalized workouts for clients.

Memberships can be purchased through the center’s website at www.powerhousebarbellandfitness.com or by visiting the center during staffed hours from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. Tuesday-Friday, 3 to 8 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday. Members can also pick up key fobs for 24-hour access during those times.
