GREENCASTLE — North Putnam got all the scores they needed in the first inning Thursday to beat Southmont 6-2 in the Greencastle 2A Sectional No. 41 game.
The Cougars offense used one hit, three walks and a Mountie error to put up three runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a lead they never relinquished.
North Putnam pitcher Owen Thurman pitched six innings and did not surrender a run while holding the Mounties to one hit and recording four strike outs.
The Mounties avoided a shutout by scoring two runs in their last at bat against Cougar pitcher Weston Houser. Southmont had three hits in the seventh inning to score their two runs.
Mounties Eli Hannum and Caden Miller each produced 1-RBI singles scoring Dean McGaughey and Gunnar Shirk who each walked early in the final frame.
Mountie Phisher Benge took the loss on the mound. The senior pitched two innings and surrendered three runs. Senior Gunnar Shirk took over in the third inning and went the rest of the way. The righty allowed three runs on six hits and struck out two in four innings.
Southmont concludes their season with a 4-19 record. Three Mountie seniors played their last game after four years of playing varsity. Shirk, Benge and Colton Cory have been in the starting lineup since they were freshmen.
Parke Heritage defeated South Putnam in the first Thursday game. The Wolves and Cougars will play 10 a.m. Saturday followed by a noon semifinal game between Greencastle and South Vermillion. The championship is scheduled for
6 p.m. Saturday.
