Offensive struggles continue for Athenians in loss to Tiger Cubs

Posted

Greencastle outscored Crawfordsville 18-10 in the opening quarter, and never looked back in a 47-38 win over the Athenians on Tuesday night in girls’ basketball.

The Athenians (1-6) once again struggled offensively — connecting on just 11-of-48 shots.

“Our offense — everything we are trying to do is still designed to make reads and go play,” Crawfordsville coach Tyler Smith said.

The Tiger Cubs (1-5) got balanced scoring in the opening quarter with four points from Raigan Chavez, while Allison Stevens chipped in seven. Stevens scored 14 of her game-high 16 points to give the Tiger Cubs a 29-17 lead at the half.

Led by four straight points from Lauren Kellerman and a bucket from Maycee York helped cut a 15-point second half deficit down to seven, but it was too little too late for the Athenians to complete the comeback.

“There’s been a few games this year where we are right there, and coming into the huddle we look a little defeated at times,” Smith said. “I thought tonight especially toward the end of the third quarter and the fourth that the look on our face was better, and our body language was better. We are definitely capable of going on big runs.”

Kellerman scored eight of her team-high 13 points in the second half. Megan Simmons chipped in 10 points, while She Williamson score seven — all from the free throw line. Crawfordsville made it to the charity stripe 27 times, but only converted 15 of them into points.

The Athenians are back in action on Saturday afternoon against Sagamore Conference foe Danville.
