ROCKVILLE — Crawfordsville opened its season with a come-from-behind 21-20 victory at Parke Heritage.
Trailing 20-14 with under three minutes left in the game, the Athenians got the ball on their own 37-yard line.
The winning drive started with a sophomore Adyn Semsprott 16-yard running placing the ball on the Wolves 43-yard line.
The Athenians converted first downs on fourth downs twice on the game winning drive.
Athenian quarterback Braeden Scholte completed the go-ahead touchdown pass to Johnovan Smith for the game winner from 16 yards out.
After the ensuing kickoff, it was Smith that shut down the Wolves last drive with an interception on the Athenians five-yard line with under 30 seconds left to play.
Semsprott had a great first varsity game. The sophomore rushed for 176 yards and two touchdowns.
Schlote was 9-for-11 passing for 97 yards. The top receiver was Landon Gerald who hauled in three passes for 49 yards.
“It was a nerve wracking game,” Crawfordsville coach Brad Clark said. “We had several big plays by several players. We made the plays when we needed to. I really believe two years ago we would not have pulled out this game. Our guys are believing in themselves and that is rewarding to the coaches.”
Crawfordsville (1-0) will entertain Fountain Central (0-1) on Friday who lost a heartbreaking 14-12 game to Southmont on Friday.
