Southmont wins on last play

VEEDERSBURG — Southmont and Fountain Central played down to the wire, but it was the Mounties who pulled out the win when freshman quarterback Eli Hannum found Caden Miller in the endzone with just 5.5 seconds left in the game to win 14-12.

Southmont scored on its first possession and took a 7-0 lead when Kasen Bushong scampered into the end zone on a four-yard run. The Mounties took the 7-0 score into halftime.

The Mustangs responded with a much better second half.

Midway in the third quarter Mustang freshman quarterback Drew Foxworthy scampered for a 43-yard rushing touchdown. After a failed 2-point conversion the Mountie lead was trimmed to 7-6.

After the Mustangs forced a Mountie punt on the ensuing drive, Fountain Central took the lead on an Asher Davis 30-yard pass to Ryan Mitchell making the score 12-7 in favor of the home team in the final quarter.

The Mountie’s last drive covered 65 yards.

“The last drive was just players making plays,” Mountie Coach Desson Hannum said. “The guys have been on the sidelines last year and they understand what it takes to win. I am proud of the comeback. We have things to work on, but it was nice to get a win after losing so much due to graduation last year.”

Southmont (1-0) will play host Friday to Owen Valley (0-1). The Patriots (1-0) defeated Brown County 64-0 last Friday.
