Athenians win in extra periods

It took two extra periods, but the Athenians stayed alive in sectional play Thursday with a 3-2 victory over Cascade. The win places Crawfordsville into Saturday’s 3A Danville Sectional game against host Danville.

Both Crawfordsville and Cascade scored one goal in each half to force a 2-2 tie. Neither team scored in the first overtime calling for a second overtime.

The Athenians led 2-1 in the second half until Cascade scored late to even the score.

Crawfordsville coaches did not provide information on the game.

Danville defeated Crawfordsville 2-1 on Oct. 1.

The Athenians (15-3) championship game against Danville (7-5-5), who eliminated North Montgomery on Thursday, is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. Saturday.

 

Danville stop Chargers

Danville beat North Montgomery 3-0 on Thursday in the 3A Sectional on the Warrior’s home pitch.

The Warriors led 1-0 at halftime before putting the game away with two second half goals.

North Montgomery coaches did not report game or player statistics this season.

The Chargers end their season with a 7-10-1 record.

Danville (7-5-5) will play Crawfordsville at 7 p.m. Saturday at Danville for the sectional championship.

 

VOLLEYBALL

Mustangs win

Fountain Central celebrated Senior Night with a 3-1 win over Indiana School for the Deaf.

Set scores were 25-23, 19-25, 25-13, 25-16.

The Mustangs were led by Aubrey Ashwill with nine kills. Patience Bixler and Makayla Carnahan each had eight kills. Chloe Ayers had 28 assists.

The Mustangs (15-12) enter Covington Sectional play next week at 12:30 p.m. Saturday against the winner of North Vermillion and Riverton Parke.

Trojans beat Athenians

Covington visited Crawfordsville on Thursday and defeated the Athenians 3-0.

Set scores were 25-19, 25-18, 25-19.

Crawfordsville’s Reese Price had 18 kills and 13 digs.

The Athenians’ Alexis Ratcliff had 18 digs.

Crawfordsville ends the regular season with a 16-13 record. The Athenians will host the 3A sectional and will open the tournament against Tri-West at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Covington (28-3) will host the 1A Sectional and will open with a 6 p.m. Thursday contest against Lafayette Central Catholic (16-11).

 

Mounties sweep Panthers

Southmont capped off Senior Night on Thursday with a 3-0 win over Riverton Parke.

Set scores were 25-11, 25-13, 25-15.

Mountie Ella Barry reached the 1,000 kills milestone early in the first set.

Southmont did not report player statistics.

Next, Southmont (12-10) will host 2A Sectional #41. The Mounties will play North Putnam (12-13) at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
