Athenians and Chargers advance

Both Crawfordsville and North Montgomery advanced to the IHSAA Crawfordsville Tennis Sectional Finals. In Wednesday’s semi-finals, Crawfordsville beat Southmont 5-0 and the Chargers beat Lebanon 3-2. 

The championship match was scheduled for Thursday.

In the inter-county match Crawfordsville won all five contests. No. 1 singles Henry Bannon beat Eden Hernandez 6-0, 6-1 and No. 2 singles Jordan Archer defeated Ethan Hutchison 6-2, 6-0. No. 3 singles Sebastion Kochert beat Mason Clouse 6-1, 6-3.

In doubles, Athenians’ No. 1 doubles Jayden Jimenez and Andrew McCoy beat Andrew Badertscher and Benjamin Gurule 6-0, 6-0. No. 2 doubles Silan Hartnett and Carter McDorman beat Job Bradley and Owen Grimes 6-0, 6-2.

Southmont has just one senior, Hernandez, this year. Five of the starting Mounties are sophomores and Hutchison is a junior.

Winning for North Montgomery were No. 2 singles Elliott Allen over Simon Kyker 6-4, 6-3 and No.3 singles Cash Cole over Kai Burcham 6-0, 6-0. The No. 2 doubles Owen DeSmet and Kaden Grundy beat Joshua Gulley and David Havdin 6-4, 6-1.

Crawfordsville and North Montgomery played Thursday for the sectional championship with the winner advancing next week to the Carmel Regional.

 

GIRLS SOCCER

Athenians win MAC championship

Crawfordsville traveled to Monon Athletic Conference foe Western Boone on Wednesday and came home as the MAC champions. The Athenians beat the Stars 6-0.

Crawfordsville scored three goals in each half.

Scoring for the Athenians were Inga Freeze with four goals and Alea Seward had two.

Crawfordsville (9-4-1, 6-0 MAC) will conclude their regular season Thursday at home against Central Catholic (0-8-2). The girls sectional will open the IHSAA Cascade Sectional on Monday against county rival North Montgomery. The two teams battled to a tie in September with the Athenians winning in a shootout.

 

VOLLEYBALL

Mounties beat Eagles

Southmont defeated South Putnam in comeback fashion on Wednesday. Set scores were 20-25, 23-25, 27-25, 25-13, 15-13.

Mountie coaches did not provide player statistics.

Southmont (9-9) played Parke Heritage (13-8) at home on Thursday.
