Athenians beat North in sudden death
Crawfordsville and North Montgomery battled the entire game with a shootout ending in sudden death. When the dust settled, it was the Athenians celebrating in the middle of the Charger’s home field with a 4-3 sudden death win.
First half goals by Chargers Savanah Ratcliff and Genesis Reyes allowed the Chargers to take a 2-1 lead going into the second period.
Athenian Gabriella Saidian scored the lone first half goal.
With 22 minutes left in the game, Crawfordsville’s Inga Freeze scored on a penalty kick to knot the game at 2-2.
North Montgomery’s offense controlled the ball much of the remainder of the game, but the Athenian defense was able to turn back their county rivals time after time.
In the first five kicks of the shoot-out, the score was 3-3 sending the game into a sudden death shootout.
The Chargers got the first attempt and Athenian senior goalkeeper Madison Martin blocked the shot marking her ninth save of the contest.
Crawfordsville senior Laura Viveros was up next and she fired a shot into the right side of freshman reserve goalkeeper Genevieve Schultz for the game winner.
Charger starting sophomore goalkeeper Addison Johnson had helped keep the game close with eight saves on Crawfordsville’s 10 shots on goal.
North Montgomery also lost to county rival Southmont earlier in the season in a shootout.
With the win the Athenians remain on top of the Monon Athletic Conference standings and give the opportunity to play Southmont on Sept.22 for the county championship.
Crawfordsville (6-3-1, 4-0 MAC) will play at Faith Christian (3-3) tonight. The Chargers (6-4, 1-3 MAC) play at Frankfort (0-8, 0-2 MAC) tonight.
Southmont beats Vikings
Southmont played at West Vigo on Wednesday. The Mounties beat the Vikings 4-1.
Scoring goals for Southmont were Camryn Priebe, Elena Barrera Morey, Emily Link and Skyler Strickland.
Molly Williams, Madison Benson and Priebe each recorded an assist.
Mountie goalkeeper Emily Simpson had seven saves.
Southmont (6-2-1, 4-1 MAC) will play at home Saturday against Benton Central (8-2).
TENNIS
Chargers blank Hot Dogs
North Montgomery played host to Monon Athletic Conference foe Frankfort on Tuesday. The Chargers won 5-0.
North’ No. 1 Singles Carter Thompson defeated Parker Ray 6-4, 6-0 and No. 2 Singles Elliott Allen beat Zach Burth 6-1, 6-1. No. 3 Singles Cash Cole defeated Will Uitts 6-1, 6-0.
The Chargers’ No. 1 Doubles of Kohen Bonebrake and Piersyn Joyce beat Tanner Angerbright and Harison Stewart 6-0, 6-0. No 2 Doubles of Owen DeSmet and Kaden Grundy beat Liam McAtee and Joseph Salvador 6-1, 6-1.
North will travel Thursday to Seeger.
Wolves down Mustangs
Wabash River Conference rival Parke Heritage defeated Fountain Central 4-1 on Tuesday.
The Wolves had victories at No. 1 singles Joel Miller with a victory over Ayden Batchelor 7-5, 6-2. No. 2 singles Jayce Crosley defeated William Armstrong 6-3, 6-4.
Parke Heritage won both doubles matches.
The No. 1 doubles team of Lucas Busenbark and Jackson Jenkins defeated Aidan Blankenship and Eli Sowder 6-2, 6-0. The No. 2 doubles team of Avery Huff and Cian Todd defeated Preston Coakly and Jerimiah Morris 6-1, 6-0.
Winning for Fountain Central was No. 3 Hayden Hargrave who beat Warner Hopkins 6-2, 6-2.
Fountain Central will play Thursday at home against Attica.
VOLLEYBALL
Mustangs beat Red Ramblers
Fountain Central won a home match Tuesday against rival Attica. The Mustangs won 3-0.
Set scores were 25-8, 25-17, 26-24.
No individual statistics were provided.
The Mustang (4-6, 2-2 WRC) will play Thursday at rival Covington (15-3, 4-0 WRC).
North downs ISD
North Montgomery traveled to Indianapolis on Tuesday and defeated Indiana School for the Deaf 3-0.
Scores were 25-19, 25-15, 25-19.
Charger Paisley Gillan had nine kills and Mallory Denham added six kills. Kate Merica had 24 assists and 13 digs.
North Montgomery (5-7, 0-4 MAC) will travel Thursday to county rival Crawfordsville(9-8, 1-2 MAC).
C’ville downs Cougars
Crawfordsville defeated North Putnam 3-0 on Tuesday.
Coaches did not report individual statistics.
The Athenians (9-8, 1-2 MAC) will play host Thursday to North Montgomery (5-7, 1-2 MAC).
