Charger boys, Athenian girls win county

For the first time in nearly 30 years, the North Montgomery Boys Cross Country team won the Montgomery County Championship. The Crawfordsville girls team ended the day back on top of the county with a championship effort.

Crawfordsville played host to the harriers. It was the first home meet for the Athenians in three years. The Athenians claimed both individual crowns. Senior Josh Inskeep (17:15) repeated as champion and junior Alea Seward (21:34) help lead her team to the team title.

The Athenian girls placed five runners in the top-10 finishers. Individual times behind Seward were fourth-Ella Seward (23:54), fifth Soren Olofson (25:05), seventh Brooklyn Wilkins (25:53) and ninth Israel Gerdes (26:04).

North Montgomery had three top-10 runners. Finishing third was Sarah Hopper (22:37), sixth Kaitlyn Kunz (25:22) and eighth Emily Redden26:03.

Southmont had two runners finish in the top-10. Hayleigh Boots (21:55) finished in second place and Marlena Trautwein (26:18) finished 10th.

Girls team scores were Crawfordsville 26, North Montgomery 40 and Southmont 63.

North Montgomery’s depth paid off in the boys’ race. The Chargers had four top-10 runners.

Chargers results were second Cooper Stephens, third Drew Dark (17:46), eighth Ethan King (19:39) and ninth Lukas Fowler (19:44).

The Mounties had three harriers finish in the top-10. In fourth was Trent Reeves (18:19), sixth Grant Reeves (19:32) and seventh Jackson Fruits (19:37).

Boys team scores were North Montgomery 33, Crawfordsville 42 and Southmont 48.

After the meet all teams gathered inside CHS for a combined Senior Night and awards presentation.

 

GOLF

Chargers claim county

North Montgomery’s golf team showed up Wednesday at the Montgomery County Championship match at the Crawfordsville Municipal Golf Course in full strength. The result was a dominating performance earning the Chargers the championship.

North, recently hampered due to an injury to Mallory Inskeep, had their full team for the county championship. The Chargers, who have had an up and down season, put it all together on Wednesday.

Team scores were North Montgomery 182, Southmont 201 and Crawfordsville 233. The top four scores from each team comprise the team totals.

Charger scores were medalist Marlee Reed 42, Inskeep 45, Izzy Hamby 48, Hadlie Horn 48, Addison Sabo 50 and Chloe Arnold 56.

Mountie scores were Lainie Ramsey 49, Kaycee Perez 49, Hamony Norton 50, Addison Kendricks 53, Maggie Gilliland 53 and Emma Gleason 56.

Crawfordsville scores were Claire Dennison 56, Samiyyah Hamilton 57, Serenity Wright 59, Naomi Sermersheim 61, Kaleigh Brown 68 and Elizabeth Nunan 70.

Southmont entered the match as winners of the last five county titles.

All three county schools will participate Saturday in the IHSAA Sectional at Harrison Hills Golf Club in Attica.

 

TENNIS

CHS drops match to Greencastle

With the Monon Athletic Conference team championship on the line, Greencastle came to Crawfordsville and defeated the Athenians 4-1. The win gives the Tiger Cubs the crown in the battle between the top two teams in the MAC.

The lone Crawfordsville win was produced by No. 3 singles Kent Calvert who defeated Dylan Waugh 6-3, 6-3.

Other scores were No. 1 singles Henry Bannon lost to Gavin Tyson 3-6, 2-6 and No. 2 singles Jordan Archer lost to Griffin Beasley 4-6, 3-6.

Athenian No. 1 doubles Jayden Jemeniz and Andrew McCoy lost to Liam Grimes and Caden Sudd 4-6, 2-6. No. 2 doubles Carter McDorman and Silas Hartnett was defeated by Harvey Cummings and Jonah Horvath 6-4, 1-6, 4-6.
