Athenians win county

Crawfordsville traveled Tuesday to county and Monon Athletic Conference rival Southmont and came away with a 3-2 victory. The highly competitive contest was close the entire way with both teams playing well, Athenian Coach Brandon Rash said.

Scoring goals for the Athenians were two scores by Alea Seward and one by Inga Freeze.

Crawfordsville led 1-0 at the half and both teams scored two goals in the final half.

Southmont did not report any player statistics.

The win gave the Athenians the county championship.

Crawfordsville remains undefeated in the MAC with a 5-0 record and are 8-4-1 overall.

The Athenians played at home Wednesday against Western Boone (2-7, 1-3 MAC).

Southmont (6-4-1, 4-2 MAC) will play Thursday at Sheridan (6-3-1).

 

VOLLEYBALL

Mounties claim County

Southmont played host to Crawfordsville and defeated the Athenians 3-1.

Set scores were 25-23, 17-25, 25-17, 25-22.

The victory earned the Mounties the county championship.

Statistic leaders for the Mounties were Ella Barry with 18 kills and 14 digs. Kaylee Turner had 19 digs and Claire Peacock recorded 27 assists and four aces. Kaydence Lewis had three blocks.

Crawfordsville was led by Reece Price’s 17 kills and five aces. Alexis Ratcliff had 22 digs and Sydney Alizondo had 23 assists.

Southmont (8-8, 3-4 MAC) plays Monday at South Vermillion (12-5) . Crawfordsville (13-10, 2-3 MAC) will play host Thursday to Fountain Central.

 

Chargers beat Cougars

North Montgomery played host Tuesday to Monon Athletic Conference foe North Putnam. The Chargers won 3-1.

Set scores were 25-22, 17-25, 25-20, 25-18.

The Chargers’ sophomore Mallory Denham had a season high 16 kills on the contest. Caelyn Carpenter had nine kills.

North Montgomery’s Kendall Barnett had five aces and Denham had three.

Charger freshman Jada Jeffers had four blocks.

North Montgomery senior Kate Merica surpassed 1,000th career assists with 38 in the victory.

The Chargers (9-9, 1-5 MAC) will play Thursday at West Lafayette (10-8).

 

Mustangs beat Bismark

Fountain Central played host Tuesday to Bismark-Henning, Illinois and won 3-1.

Set scores were 25-20, 25-15, 21-25, 25-14.

Mustang leaders were Chloe Ayers with 31 assists, five blocks and five aces. Aubrey Ashwill had eight kills and five blocks. Savannah Bowers served four aces. Mallory Mason recorded 16 digs.

Fountain Central (10-8) will play Thursday at Crawfordsville.

 

CROSS COUNTRY

Mounties host invite

Southmont’s annual Leap Into September meet was rescheduled for Tuesday. The event had been postponed due to weather earlier in the month.

Crawfordsville’s Josh Inskeep won the boy’s event with a time of 17:20. A total of 46 runners competed in the boys race.

Other results were not available due to times not being posted correctly.

 

TENNIS

Chargers win at Covington

North Montgomery defeated Covington 4-1 on the Trojans’ home courts.

All three Charger singles won. No. 1 singles Carter Thompson defeated Easton Alexander 6-2, 6-3 and No. 2 singles Elliott Allen beat Sabie Gerling 6-1, 7-5. No. 3 singles Cash Cole beat Rowen Doer 6-1, 6-0.

The Chargers No. 2 doubles team of Owen DeSmet and Kaden Grundy beat Laben Shuman and Nathan Webster 6-2, 7-5. The No. 1 doubles team of Kohen Bonebrake and Piersyn Joyce lost 3-6, 6-3, 11-9.

North Montgomery (8-9) will play Thursday at Attica.

 

Stars down Mustangs

Fountain Central lost 4-1 at home to Western Boone on Tuesday.

The lone winner for Fountain Central was No. 1 singles Ayden Batchelor who defeated Jacob Collins 3-6, 7-6 (3), 11-9.

At No. 2 singles Mustang William Armstrong lost to Easton Nance 2-6, 1-6 and No. 3 singles Hayden Hargrave lost to WeBo’s Easton Nance 0-6, 1-6.

In doubles action, the Mustangs No. 1 doubles team of Aiden Blankenship and Eli Sowder lost to Burke Cavins and Zac Weesles 6-4, 3-6, 2-6 and at No. 2 doubles Preston Coakley and Jerimiah Morris lost 2-6, 3-6 to Logan Cripe and Reese Young.

Fountain Central (6-6) travels Thursday to Greencastle.
