South beats Chargers in shootout
North Montgomery played host to Southmont on Tuesday. Playing in the heat, the Mounties outlasted the Chargers by winning in a shootout 3-1 after the two teams played to a 1-1 tie in regulation.
The victory keeps Southmont undefeated in the Monon Athletic Conference with a 2-0 record. The loss is the first one of the season for the Chargers.
Mountie Molly Williams scored a goal in the opening half to put her team ahead 1-0 at the break.
The Chargers’ freshman Olivia Nuppnau evened the score in the second half with an assist from Courtney Bennett.
The Mounties got goals from Camryn Priebe, Emma Benge and Emily Link in the tiebreaker.
A North Montgomery penalty kick was scored by Genesis Reyes.
South goalkeeper Emily Simpson and North goalkeeper Genevieve Schultseach had good games.
Southmont (4-1-1, 2-0 MAC) will host MAC foe North Putnam on Thursday. The Chargers (4-1, 1-1 MAC) will travel Thursday to Twin Lakes (2-4).

Athenians rout Trojans
Crawfordsville defeated Covington 10-1 at home on Tuesday.
Athenian Dylan Figueroa scored three goals and had four assists.
Seven Athenians scored in the match.
Crawfordsville goalkeepers Noe Torres and Luke Bush combined for four saves.
Crawfordsville (6-1) will travel Tuesday to Speedway (3-3).

Mounties drop Chargers
With each team winning one of the first two sets, Southmont took control midway in game three and led from start to finish in the fourth set to win 3-1 over county rival North Montgomery. The match was played in front of a big and enthusiastic crowd as the Mounties broke their four-game losing streak.
Set scores were 26-24, 21-25, 25-17, 25-17.
The Mounties were behind midway in the first set but recovered to win the set.
Southmont was led by Ella Barry’s 23 kills and 19 digs. Layla Shaw added 12 kills. Myla Malone had 38 assists.
Leading North Montgomery were Mallory Denman with five kills out of the total Charger kills of 23. Paisley Gillan had four aces but the Chargers’ serving rate was just 75%. Gillan also had 11 digs.
Southmont (2-4, 1-3 MAC) plays Thursday at conference foe Cascade (6-2, 1-0 MAC). North Montgomery (3-3, 0-2 MAC) played Wednesday at Parke Heritage (1-5).
Cadets stop Athenians
Crawfordsville lost Tuesday at Monon Athletic Conference foe Cascade 3-0.
Set scores were 19-25, 23-25, 17-25.
Athenian Reese Price had 12 kills to lead her team. Alexis Ratcliff had 12 digs, and Sydney Elizondo recorded 22 assists.
Cascade’s record is now 6-2 and 1-0 in the MAC.
Crawfordsville (4-5, 0-2 MAC) will play Thursday at Attica (0-8).
Mustangs lose at Parke Heritage
Fountain Central lost to Wabash River Conference rival Parke Heritage 3-0. Scores were 18-25, 22-25, 24-26.
No individual statistics were made available.
The Mustangs play host Thursday to WRC foe South Vermillion.
TENNIS
Red Devils defeat Athenians
Crawfordsville received its first loss of the season Tuesday, falling to West Lafayette 1-4. The lone win came from Kent Calvert at No. 3 singles, who defeated Abdullah Alcozai 6-2, 6-3.
Match scores were at No. 1 singles Henry Bannon lost to Linden Xiang 0-6, 0-6 and No. 2 singles Jordan Archer lost to Ethan Nanowski 2-6, 6-7 (2).
Crawfordsville’s No. 1 doubles team of Jayden Jimenez and Andrew McCoy lost 0-6, 1-6 and No. 2 doubles team of Carter McDorman and Silas Hartnett lost to Theo Yang and Zach Barash 1-6, 2-6.
Crawfordsville played Wednesday at Central Catholic.
Southmont drops match
Southmont lost to Monon Athletic Conference foe Geencastle 5-0 on Tuesday.
Mounties scores were No. 1 singles Eden Hernandez fell to Garin Tyson 1-6, 0-6 and No. 2 singles Ethan Hutchison lost to Giffen Beasley 1-6, 0-6. No. 3 singles Mason Clouse lost to Dylan Waugh 0-6, 0-6.
The Mounties’ No. 1 doubles team of Andrew Badertcher and Ben Gruele lost to Liam Grimes and Cayden Scott 0-6, 0-6. The No. 2 doubles team of Job Bradley and Owen Grimes lost to Harry Cummings and Jonah Horrath 0-6, 0-6.
Monon Athletic Conference rival Crawfordsville will visit Southmont on Thursday.
Mustangs beat Trojans
Fountain Central defeated Covington 3-2 on Tuesday.
Winners for Fountain Central were No. 1 singles Ayden Batchelor over Easton Alexander 6-0, 1-0 retired. No. 2 singles William Armstrong beat Sabie Gerling 5-7, 6-2, 6-0 and No. 3 singles Hayden Hargrave won against Nathan Webster 6-0, 6-3.
Next for Fountain Central is their own invitational on Saturday. Opponents will be Lafayette Central Catholic, South Putnam and West Vigo.
Wolves down S. Vermillion
Parke Heritage defeated South Vermillion 5-0 on Tuesday.
No. 1 singles Joel Miller defeated Carter Allen, 6-0, 6-0. No. 2 singles Jayce Crosley defeated Henry Stateler, 6-0, 6-0. No. 3 singles Wesley Pratt defeated Norton Newcomb, 6-1, 6-4.
At No. 1 doubles, the team of Cian Todd and Jackson Jenkins defeated Blake Buckingham and Brayden Crim, 6-0, 7-6, TB 7-4. The No. 2 doubles team of Avery Huff and Lucas Busenbark defeated Cam Lemmons and Rylan Wright, 6-0, 6-0.
