Raiders fire past Chargers

Posted

WEST LAFAYETTE — Harrison ran out of the gate, and North Montgomery failed to follow in a 73-39 blowout loss for the Chargers on Saturday.

“They were on fire,” North Montgomery coach Chad Arnold said. “They ran their offense, and we didn’t take them out of anything. I felt like we were scared, and I don’t know why, because we have some good players and a good team, we just have to be more prepared.”

The Raiders (4-2) connected on 11-of-12 shots in the first quarter — taking a 28-9 lead after eight minutes. Harrison’s lead grew to 45-17 at the half behind 15 first half points from Jordan Walters. The senior led all scorers with 19, while Jonah Lucas chipped in 17 for the Raiders, including 15 over the first 16 minutes.

North Montgomery (3-2) responded with a hard-fought third quarter, outscoring the Raiders 12-10, but it wasn’t enough for a second half comeback.

“We just wanted to see some fight,” Arnold said. “That wasn’t the team we are. I think we are a lot better team than that. I know we are. We just didn’t bring the fight like they did.”

Jack Thompson led the Chargers with 14 points on 7-of-13 shooting, a bright spot that Arnold feels like they take can advantage of down the road.

“Jack is a tough player,” he said of his senior big man. “We’ve got to get him the basketball. We are missing him all the time, and we’ve got to start seeing him. He’s hard to handle.”

The rest of the Charger team was a combined 8-of-35 from the field. Preston Shaw chipped in nine points, while Jaron Bradford added six.
